BS8300 & Approved Document “M” of the Building Regulations

These documents recommend that locks should have a minimum of a 55mm backset and that the centres should be a minimum of 72mm to comply with the Equalities Act. Locks with keyways above the cylinder are also suitable.

Older lock cases do not always comply as they generally have centres of 48.5mm, 51mm or 57mm and sometimes backsets less than 55mm.
