Temporary dwellings in disaster zones built from cardboard tubes

cardboard tube houses

A Japanese architect has won the 2014 Pritzker Architecture Prize for designing a range of buildings for refugees of natural disasters.  Shigeru Ban uses long cardboard tubes to construct “low-cost but dignified housing” which he first proposed in 1994 in response to the Rwandan genocide.  Since then, his buildings have served as shelter for people swept up in the Japanese tsunami, the Haitian earthquake and most recently the storm-hit Philippines.  This story was of particular interest here at doorstuff HQ due to the large number of long tubes we keep in stock for sending out the sliding door gear tracks up to 6 metres.

For the longer tracks we reinforce the tubes with timber beams to prevent damage in transit.  Congratulations to Shigeru Ban, who will be awarded his prize in Amsterdam this June.
