The H102 hinge is a three knuckle, fixed pin butt hinge.  The bearing arrangement in Royde and Tucker H102 Hi-Load hinges accounts for both vertical and lateral loads, as well as spreading the load over as wide a surface area as possible. Sliding-folding gear may be used without a bottom guide, in some cases..

sliding folding gear
If considering a Coburn Foldaside 100 top hanging sliding folding gear in a situation where a bottom guide rail cannot be used, as the underlying floor is concrete and the 15mm groove in to which to set the bottom guide could not be provided. The manufacturer’s guidelines are that “The floor guide and channel must be used on doors over 15kg or 450mm wide.”  The reason is that the floor guide takes most of the lateral load off the hinges, and hinges supplied with the kits are only lightweight.  It might be an idea to look at the more heavy duty Saheco SF-A84D sliding-folding system, because we supply that with Royde & Tucker H102 or H104 Hi Load hinges.  Alternatively Hi-load hinges can be purchased separately, which would mean you would almost certainly be successful without the bottom guide.

Case Study: when Hi-Load hinges would have been a better choice

hinge-case-study

The hinge on the left is a stainless steel 4″ ball bearing butt hinge spotted on a fire door in the gents’ toilet of a busy Exeter department store.  The hinge on the right is a new stainless steel 4″ ball bearing butt hinge, pictured for comparison purposes.  The top bearing has collapsed, its ball bearings have been lost, the washer can be seen protruding out of the joint like a slipped disc.  The effect of this is that the whole weight of the door is resting on the centre knuckle which has compressed onto the collar below causing them to wear each other away.  The degraded state of this hinge increases the opening force potentially causing it to fall foul of the recommendations of BS8300 (DDA/The Equalities Act).  A Hi-load hinge, such as the Royde & Tucker H102 fixed pin hinge, would have been a much better choice for this door.  Why?
1. The frequency of use for this door could be reasonably predicted to be very high
2. The width of the door was at least 926mm, a long lever (wide door) exerts more power at its axle (hinges) than a shorter one (or narrower door)
3. The door had a door closer, which increases the “adjusted door weight” thus; a door closer adds 20% to the weight, and a back check door closer adds an additional 75%

I am trying to find H086 – 85 x 76 x 3mm lift off hinges. Our doors are 35mm, would these hinges be suitable for that?

The H086 Royde & Tucker hinges are available from us in BZP (Bright Zinc Plate) and also a wide range of other finishes.  35mm is the minimum door thickness which these hinges will suit.  They are handed left or right.
